ONSET

Concept, programming, electronics

Exhibited at the 4th Shenzhen Independent Animation Biennale in China, 2018

“Onset” is an exploration of the relationship between mankind and nature. It questions the act of human intervention, but also entwinement. Couples, be it animals or humans, unconsciously synchronize their heartbeats to achieve better communication and harmony. The transfer of this intention to a stone, is a strive for affinity, a first step towards empathy.

The spectator is invited to sit down and initiate contact with nature’s passive actors. Upon touching the stone, he will get a response in form of a heartbeat synchronizing with his. This is made possible through an arduino, sensors and motors incorporated into a real stone.
